Tips for Parents of Competitive Dancers

Being a dance parent is a special kind of commitment—early mornings, late nights, costume fittings, rehearsals, and lots of emotional highs and lows. Whether you’re new to the competition scene or a seasoned veteran, here are a few tips to help you support your dancer while keeping the experience positive and rewarding for everyone.

1. Be Their Biggest Cheerleader (Not Their Coach)
Let your dancer’s teachers do the technical correcting. Your job? Celebrate their effort, encourage their passion, and remind them that their worth isn’t tied to a trophy.

2. Prioritize Rest and Nutrition
Competition weekends can be long and exhausting. Make sure your dancer stays hydrated, eats nourishing meals, and gets plenty of rest so they can perform their best and stay healthy.

3. Stay Organized
Keep track of comp dates, rehearsal schedules, costume pieces, and packing lists. A labeled dance bag and checklist can save a lot of stress during busy weekends!

4. Focus on Progress Over Placement
Every dancer grows at their own pace. Celebrate personal wins—like improved technique, stage confidence, or overcoming nerves—just as much as (if not more than) awards.

5. Create a Safe Space for Emotions
Dance can be emotional. If your child is disappointed or frustrated, give them space to feel it without judgment. Being heard and supported helps them bounce back stronger.

6. Enjoy the Journey
Competitive dance teaches so much more than steps—discipline, teamwork, resilience, and creativity. Take a moment to soak in the memories, friendships, and fun along the way.
